NY & VT Trip Day #3

Tuesday, May 7, 2024

Today was a walk down memory lane. We started the day by visiting my Grandmother Traynor who turned 100 years old this past October 2023. We found her as sharp as I remember and as we visited she was able to recall many things I had forgotten.

Afterwards, we drove to the small town where I grew up, West Chazy, NY. This is a photo of my grade school where I attend the 1st through 5th grades. This is no longer a school, but to me it will alway be West Chazy Elementary School. The room to the right of the front door in this image was my 4th grade classroom.

Some of my favorite memories of this school happened in this classroom. This was my 5th grade classroom and my teacher was John Connery. Mr. C will go down as one of my very favorite teachers ever.

The old Dodge Library was an integral part of my grade school experience and I have fond memories of this building as well. Lisa and I went inside and it is still very much the way I remember it from 45 years ago!

This is the old dam across the Little Chazy River on Route 22. You can still see what was the actual top of the dam on each side of the river. This dam made for an impressive waterfall for a small town like West Chazy. However, time and lack of maintenance have resulted in its deterioration and it no longer holds back the river and the water flow is much less impressive. Much of the area you see here above the dam was under water back in my time. I recall the water line being right up to the base of the large tree on the right side of the photo.

The childhood home of my father where he lived with my grandparents and his three younger sisters. I spent a lot of time here and have wonderful memories of this place. I can’t see this house and not think of all the Christmas Eve gatherings we shared here when the whole family got together.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in West Chazy where my family attended church every week for the entire time we lived there. It has changed very little in the past almost 40 years since I last set foot inside.
