Whitman Dike

We discovered this walking trail called the Whitman Dike in Cochrane, Wisconsin. It is a 6.8-mile out-and-back walk along the eastern shore of the Mississippi River. The views are quite nice and we look forward to visiting again in the fall when the foliage is changing. Today, the lily pads were blooming.

Across the river, on the western side, is the city of Minneiska, MN.

We didn’t have the proper lens for this shot, only had the 33mm with us for this walk. But, we will include it here anyway.

Navigation buoy to help the barges navigate the river’s main channel. Click on the MAP link below and using satellite view you can see the buoy out there in the river.

You can really appreciate the bluffs along this stretch of the river.

Here is a new look at Lock & Dam 5. We always enjoy visiting this lock and dam on the Minnesota side, but we had never seen it from the Wisconsin side before.

On the way back to the car we stopped to say hi to this BIG gal. Wish I would have had the Macro lens for this one, but it still came out okay with the 33mm. This is a female Wolf Spider and those are all babies on the back of her large abdominal area. We have never seen this before. Lisa correctly identified those as baby spiders once we enlarged the photo afterwards. Looking up images of wolf spider with babies confirms she was correct. Now we really wish we had the Macro lens with us for this opportunity.
