South Dakota Day #3

Winter Street is the main drag down the middle of Keystone, SD. They very much strive for the wild west vibe. If you ever visit, the Rushmore Mountain Taffy Shop has the best salt water taffy.

More chainsaw art and I have to admit, I have a thing for yetis!
Fujifilm X-Pro3 23mm, 1/800 sec, f/2.8, ISO 160
The sheer size of this yeti is staggering!! This thing is at LEAST two stories high.
Also, it appears that Dahls has a monopoly on the chainsaw art market in this part of the country. It seemed like every town we visited had a chainsaw art dealer. However, upon further inspection, they were all Dahls.

Lisa just can’t get enough of posing with chainsaw art. In reality, she cursed my name every time! But, she made it look like it was a real blast….

We can’t stop laughing as we post these foolish pictures! I’m just thankful she doesn’t want to learn to use the camera, or else I would be mounting these crazy things.

What every diehard Harley Davidson lover needs; a screaming eagle replica in front of their home.

Okay, we promise, this is the last one! But who can resist one more Yeti?

1880 Train is an actual locomotive and passenger car that carries tourists between the towns of Hill City and Keystone. This is the Keystone depot stop.

This is a very typical landscape in the Black Hills. It is fascinating how these pine trees can find a way to grow out of the smallest cracks in the rocks. This photo was taken on the Centennial Trail. The Centennial Trail is 123 miles long and takes between 5-10 days to hike according to the website backpackingroutes.com. We walked about 2 miles of it.

Another image from the Centennial Trail. And, once again, check out the size of this tree growing out of what seems like an impossible spot for a tree of that size.

Lakota Lake is just off 16A between Keystone and Custer State Park. This is a rather secluded place and we have often been the only people here when we stop; as was the case today.
Fujifilm X-Pro3 23mm, 1/400 sec, f/7.1, ISO 160
This is taken from a place called Heddy Draw Overlook. It provides a nice view down into the valley below.

Custer State Park buffalo. Most of the females have young ones with them and they don’t stray too far from their mothers.

The buffalo herd relaxing in the park. That sky looks nice here, but things are about to change in a big way….

Custer State Park Wildlife Loop is a must-see when you are in the area. Go slow and enjoy, your way is often blocked by herds of buffalo roaming free across the road.

Lisa really enjoyed feeding Sedrick’s Milk-Bone treats to the begging burros. They may be dog treats, but burros LOVE them too!

Noting in this world makes her happier than interacting with animals.

Legion Lake is located on 16A. There is a lodge and campground here as well. This is a very popular recreation area in-season. The skies continue to change and in just a few minutes things are going to look very different.
Fujifilm X-Pro3 23mm, 1/100 sec, f/5.6, ISO 160
Stockade Lake is also located on 16A just outside of the town of Custer. The wooden bridge on the left of this photo is a very interesting piece of engineering.

Throughout the day the temperature had been in the 60s. As the sun started to set, a front moved in and the temperature drop was the most rapid I have ever seen. As we were driving along Highway 87 on the north end of Needles Highway, heavy fog rolled in (as seen above) and the temperature would drop a degree or two every mile we drove. By the time we were back in Rapid City, the temperature was below freezing. Some areas got upward to 5” of snow that night.
