Effigy Mounds National Monument

Effigy Mounds National Monument involves a rather steep hike to the top of the bluffs along the Mississippi. However, once you get to the top of the trail you are rewarded with some spectacular views. Here we are looking southward, down the Mississippi River.

This is always one of our favorite views from the bluff. You can see the Great River Road (Iowa Rt 76), the railroad, and the Mississippi River; three very important means of transportation.
This farm is located across the river on the Wisconsin side as viewed from the top of the bluff.
Here is one of the mounds. Some are simple hills like this and others are more elaborate, made in the shape of animals.
On this particular day, we walked the trail all the way to the very end to Hanging Rock Overlook. This is the view from the end of the trail looking northward upriver.
