We started Day #2 with a 6.8-mile hike at Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca, WI.

MAP

This is the spillway from the dam that creates the lake in the photo above.

This was a peaceful and pleasant walk in the woods. Not too much to photograph here, but when Lisa and I both spotted this lichen pattern on a tree at the same time it was worth an image.

Abundant waterfowl out enjoying the sunshine on the lakes.

This pine tree reflected on the lake made for an interesting image.

Our next stop was Neenah, WI for a walk around Little Lake Butte Des Morts. Neenhah is a very industrial town, but they have really invested in their green space infrastructure. This walking path is built on an old train trestle and it is quite impressive.

MAP

If you have ever walked around Rochester and paid any attention to the manhole covers you will see they read “Neenah Foundry, Neenah, WI.” This is where they are from. It appears that in addition to the steel foundry, there is also a thriving paper-manufacturing trade and several other heavy industry in the area.

I’m guessing the tax base from the industry in Neenah goes a long way toward the development of such nice green spaces. They have clearly made this a priority and I think Rochester could learn a thing or two from their town planners.

Who knew??? All these years I thought this was located in a much different place. Found her here in Neenah! In truth, I suspect this is one of the boy scout statues that you can find all throughout the land.

Downtown Neenah from the pier at Shattuck Park. Again, I couldn’t be more impressed with this little town.

Some of the heavy industry which really seems to co-exist so nicely with such an attractive town.

Our final stop for the day was in Appleton, WI where we walked a little on the campus of Lawrence University and the downtown area.

MAP

Lawrence University was the first co-ed university in the state of Wisconsin. It had its first graduating class in the 1850’s which consisted of seven graduates and at least three of them were women.

This building, just across the street from the university, is actually a museum.
