Sunny Valley School was originally named the Goethel School. It was built in 1903 and classes began in January of 1904. The teacher was paid $35 per month and was responsible for teaching 8 grades, as well as keeping the school clean and heated with a wood burning box stove. There were no paved roads in the area and many of the children walked over 2 miles one way each morning and afternoon.
